Function

Type

A rotary drum composter toilet of high quality, for installation indoors and for continuous year-round use. Can be installed in apartment houses.

Construction

Consists of a thermally insulated composter drum and a normal size toilet seat, which have been combined to form a compact unit. An emptying container is located in the free protected space inside the drum. The seat bowl separates liquids. Freezing does not break the appliance, but may prevent the use until the compost mass has thawed.

Material

Front portion and bowl fibreglass, shell and internal parts recyclable polyethylene. Metal parts stainless or acid-resistant steel. Choice of materials is based on environmental criteria, e.g. PVC is not used.

Function

Natural processing. Based on composting, which is characterized by rise of temperature without any outer energy source. The drum is like a concrete mill, containing always 30 litres compost mass. The amount of the mass in the drum remains constantly the same. When new material is added into the compost, the excess mass is gradually shaken out into the emptying container by the rotation of the drum. Drum mixing also covers the waste immediately and prevents odour. Even paper decomposes completely. No chemicals are employed.

Capacity

Recommendation: 1-5 persons in continuous use. No absolute maximum, the amount of users only influence the time of the process and the stage of the final product. Unlimited capacity for liquids, due to separation.

Use

The Naturum allows a standing urinating position and also washing down with a shower hose. When used in seated position, the shutter-seal at the base of the bowl is opened. The shape of the bowl separates the urine. Paper can be used like in the flush toilet. After use the pedal is pressed. The drum rotates and the refuse is covered by the compost mass. The shutter-seal is closed by the handle, the bowl can be flushed with a shower hose or a cup of water, and the toilet is ready for use again.

Bidet

Washing with water is a self-evident part of toilet hygiene. Since the compost space can be closed with the shutter-seal, a shower hose can be used for bidet and washing the bowl.

Absorbent

Absorbent is added weekly; 1-1,5 litres/person/week. A good absorbent is unfertilized milled peat.

Emptying

Open the access cover above the seat. The emptying container is removed. The final product is odourless and looks like soil.
The decomposed, homogenous, odourless final substance is collected in a 10 litre container, which can be closed with a cap. The container is removed from behind the lid above the seat, and emptied for further composting e.g. with domestic or garden refuse. Emptying frequency in use by four persons is about once a month.

Installation

Width of door opening for Naturum installation access 630 mm assembled, 500 mm disassembled. Connections: ventilation and liquid outlet. The Naturum is not fixed down to the floor. The material of the floor should withstand water. In a house with natural ventilation the ventilation shaft is led out to the roof as near vertical as possible. Slopes may not be more than 45° off vertical. If it is necessary to install the ventilation shaft contradictory to these recommendations, a fan ought to be installed to ensure airflow. The position of exit for fluids may be altered according to need. The emptying pipe may discharge into a greywater floordrain, into its own drain for the collection urine, ore directly outwards through the wall, provided that it is sufficiently well insulated against freezing. The diameter of the pipe should be at least 50 mm.

Starting to use

The Naturum must be run-in by pouring 30 litres of damp absorbent through the seat opening into the drum and rotating it by depressing the pedal. Recommended materials for the start set:
